How the Quran Justifies Itself

In a previous posting about Islam’s rational monotheism (which may be read here), we saw how the Qur’an espouses a universal rationalist discourse to substantiate some of its main theological doctrines. As for how the Qur’an vindicates itself, and rationalises its claim of truly being the Word of God, it deploys the following line of argument: Firstly, it states that the Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace, was an unlettered Prophet [7:157]; that is, he was unable to read or write, and most certainly uneducated in the modern sense of the word: And you did not used to recite any book before this, and nor did you write it with your right hand. Birds of a Feather Hopefully will Flock Together

Birds of a Feather Hopefully will Flock Together A Muslim’s Reflections on the New Pope By - Imam Afroz Ali 1. Birds, Francis and the New Pope I was somewhere in between Singapore and Sydney when fumata Bianca from the chimneys of the Sistine Chapel announced to the world of a new Pope who would lead its over 1.2 billion Catholic adherents. I was flying on a modern mechanical bird; an airplane. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first non-European, was elected the new Pope on 13th March. Interestingly, before the chimneys went off in white smoke, birds flocked around it, and for some Catholics, the birds were already a positive sign given the Read more ...

Malcolm X’s Letter from Makkah

The following is Malcolm X’s (al-Hajj, Malik al-Shabazz) letter to his assistants in Harlem during his pilgrimage to Makkah in April of 1964: Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient holy land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the holy scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the holy city of Makkah; I have made my seven circuits around the Ka'aba, led by a young Mutawwaf Read more ...

Speak good or remain silent

Speak a good word or remain silent

Abu Hurairah relates that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor, and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet. (i.e. abstain from all kinds of evil and dirty talk)." [Sahih al-Bukhari, Book #75, Hadith #47] The importance of this hadith This hadith discusses some of the ways a Muslim's faith should affect the way he relates to others. Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani writes: “This hadith speaks about three matters, and in doing so it brings together Read more ...

Mocking the Prophet, How Should We React??

How should we Muslim react to mockery of our Prophet Muhammad  or should we even react at all? Just like the cartoons few years ago, the Muslim response to the recent film has been very diverse.  From the very mild of responses to the very violent ones, what's most noteworthy is the enormity of the response.  Despite the consensus that the film did not deserve the attention it was getting, social media kept being flooded, and still is, with messages defending the Prophet .  So, before another incident of mockery takes place, since it seems that it's only a matter of time before someone else tries to play on the sensitivities of Muslims, let's Read more ...
