When the Imam refused, he was struck with a hundred and ten lashes. He was beaten so severely that his head was swollen and breathing became difficult for him. He remained strong throughout his torture but when he found out that, his mother was grieved by what had happened to him, his eyes overflowed with tears.
Thucydides, the well-known author of The History of the Peloponnesian War wrote: “The strong do as they can, while the weak suffer what they must.” This summarizes what had been happening in the dark ages of yesteryears, and what is happening unfortunately right now at the behest of “the leaders of civilization”. In fact, soon after the Second World War, international laws were instituted by all the reigning powers, to prevent the terrible sufferings likely to be inflicted on the weak by the strong. The idea was to uphold right rather than might. These internationally approved laws of war are codified in the UN Charter, the Geneva Conventions, and the Nuremberg principles adopted by the UN. It is also noteworthy that all the major world religions have given edicts and precepts to tame the passions of people leading to mutual violence. It is ironical that Jesus of Nazareth who taught his disciples to “turn the other cheek” was allegedly nailed on the cross. And the greatest advocate of Ahimsa (nonviolence) in the twentieth century — Mahatma Gandhi — was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic. This points to the necessity of defeating the forces of evil even by the use of force; that is to say, we must be prepared to fight for peace, if need be. Jewish Ideas About War & Justice Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson has this to say towards the conclusion of an article entitled: “Judaism, War and Justice”: “We have examined and rejected two types of war: the Conquest and aggressive war… Only one type of warfare, defensive war, is still permitted. Only combat that is responding to an attack, only defense in order to prevent imminent killing can be vindicated morally. All other warfare is ethically unjustifiable. And it is that position which most authorities of Halakhah have asserted for almost two thousand years. Judaism has established an impressive legal edifice to reflect its ethical opposition to state-organized killing. The very simplicity of the usable law asserts the force of the moral statement — to choose to wage war is unethical.” (Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, Judaism, War and Justice, last accessed January, 25, 2009) In the article “The Jewish Way to Wage War”, we read several rules to be followed in war time. Here is one good example: “When in battle, a Jewish army must not completely surround the enemy on all four sides. The army must leave one side open in order to allow non-combatants to flee and needless bloodshed to be avoided.” (The Jewish Way to Wage War, last accessed January, 25, 2009) Prophet Isaiah declares that the ultimate aim of war is peace: “.. And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” (Isaiah 2:4, The Tanakh, Jewish Virtual Library) Yet, there are several verses of a different tenor that the Israelis of today apparently follow, such as these: “Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.” ( Isaiah13:15-16, The Tanakh, JVL) And read this about the war on the Medianites: According to the source, Prophet Moses said, “‘Have you saved all the women alive? …kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that has known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” (Numbers 31:15, 17, 18, The Tanakh, JVL) Paradoxically enough, this is what the Pharaoh did to the Israelites, when they were in Egypt. Now Moses, according to the Jewish Tanakh, chooses to inflict the same kind of ‘holocaust’ on the Medianites, who had nothing to do with Pharaoh’s persecution. The Book of Joshua (Yehoshua) is filled

Friday Khutbah (Sermons) : Reflect On Other Creatures’ Worship - by Imam Al-Haramain Sheikh Saud ash Shuraim from the Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, Rabi’ul Akhir 14 , 1423AH (July 5th, 2002) The Transcript: All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions. Fellow Muslims! The Almighty Creator created this universe with His knowledge and wisdom and created in it all that exists of the angels, men, jinn, animals, plants and other things which none but He knows. He created all these for a single purpose that all acts of worship should be solely His, that all these beings should affirm His Lordship and actualize all acts of worship for Him alone; and that they should admit their helpless, submission and their need for Him alone. Hence, the actualization of worship for Allah alone cannot be properly achieved except by obeying Him and standing firm on the right path that the religion may be Allah’s, that judgment may be His and that all calls may be to Him. This duty can be carried out only by those whom Allah has made successors in and inhabitants of the earth and that cannot be achieved by man except through words of the tongue, deeds of the heart and the limbs. Also, real act of worship cannot be actualized in the best form except by completely and absolutely surrendering and submitting to Allah with utmost love for Him. Therefore, the best man in actualizing worship to Allah is the best in submission and surrender to Him. Worship in essence, is the religion and the only acceptable religion before Allah is Islam. “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter, he will be among the losers.” (Quran 3:85) This is the purpose of creating the creation. Allah also says, “And I created not the jinn and mankind except that they may worship me.” (Quran 51:56) He also says, “Did you think that We created you in play (without any purpose) and that you would not be brought back to Us?” (Quran 23:115) He says, while rebuking a group of mankind who were heedless of the lessons inherent in the universe around them, “And how many a sign in the heaven and the earth they pass by, while they are averse thereof. And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him.” (Quran 12:105-106) SubhanAllah! Do they not see the illuminating stars, and the revolving orbits which all are subjected to the Command of Allah? How many are adjacent places, gardens, mountains, seas and waves that are on the earth, yet they ascribe daughters to Allah and worship others beside Him. Glory be to the One God Who created all the creations. In view of this, the wise person will be highly surprised to see the matters of this universe turning upside down and see man turning away from worshiping Allah Who created him and being occupied with this finite world, after Allah has honored him, made him travel in the land and in the sea, favored him above many of His creatures, and endowed him with many blessings. With all this, yet man is arrogant, disbelieves, misbehaves, is stingy and argues. Allah says about him in this situation, “Verily, man is indeed an extreme wrong-doer.” (Quran, 13 :34) “And man is ever miserly!” (Quran, 17:100) “But man is ever more quarrelsome than anything.” (Quran, 18:54) “Nay! Verily, man does transgress (in disbelief and evil deeds), because he considers himself self-sufficient.” (Quran, 96:6-7) What is however suitable for this man who has been endowed with the above great favors is to be an obedient servant of his Lord not an arrogant rebel, to be grateful and righteous and not ingrate wrong-doer. When one ponders over many of the creatures in this universe one will realize that, there

In the past few centuries the Muslim world was much more integrated than we realize. It was one social, cultural, religious and economic domain. Its language, system of education, currency, and laws were the same. When British journalist Robert Fisk said that in the face of disaster Arabs act like mice, he was being polite. He could have said that the Muslims act like mice. The question is why? It is easy and customary to blame the current Muslim rulers for this sorry situation. No doubt the Iraq invasion would not have been possible without their acquiescence and support. If they refused to open their lands, waterways, and airspace to the invasion, it could not have taken place. Neither would the slaughters in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosova, Kashmir, Chechnya, and Palestine have been possible if the Muslim rulers had their act together. But was it only because the Muslim rulers happened to be immoral, coward, and unscrupulous characters? Is the 1.2 billion strong Ummah suffering only because there are fifty-four corrupt persons who are ruling it? These rulers do not carry out all their plans personally. They have armies of compliant soldiers, bureaucrats, and other staffers at every level of government that do the dirty work. Further the societies at large produce, nurture, and sustain the corrupt machinery of the corrupt governments. As we continue our investigation, we find that our problem is corruption; not only of the rulers but also of the ruled. Today we have strayed from the Shariah in our personal lives; we lie, cheat, steal at a higher rate than ever before; we exploit and oppress in our small spheres. In short, our problems are caused by our moral corruption. But there is something more. And it is getting scant attention in the Muslim discourse. Islam teaches us the correctness of belief is even more important than correctness of deeds. There is an implied message here: The corruption of ideas is far more devastating than the corruption of actions. This may be happening here. We complain about the particular tribal leaders that happen to be there today but forget about the tribalism that sits at the root of all this. This tribalism of the nation-states has been enshrined into the constitutions, legal structures, bureaucracies, and the entire apparatus of government in every Muslim country. Its language and thinking, though anathema to Islam, has gained widespread acceptance. While we condemn its outcome, we do not sufficiently examine or challenge the system itself. We constantly talk about the Muslim brotherhood and the need for Muslim unity. We assert that Muslims are one Ummah. Simultaneously — and without much thought — we embrace the symbols, ideas, and dictates of its exact opposite. We have lived under our nation-states, celebrated our national days, and sang our national anthems all our lives. As a result the realization that the gap between the idea of the nation-state and that of one Ummah is wider than can be patched with good leaders of individual nation-states does not occur easily. We do not realize that we may be trying to simultaneously ride two different boats going in opposite directions. So let us consider some real life situations. In Pakistan, the provinces of Sind and Punjab share the Indus River. Available water is less than their combined needs and Punjab is situated upstream while Sind is downstream. Quite naturally, there is constant bickering over the distribution of water. The conflict is resolved by the presence of a central government and by the realization that both provinces belong to the same country. Now imagine that the two provinces had been transformed into two separate countries. We can be certain that the small issue that no body in the world knows about or cares about today would become a big international conflict. And it may matter little whether they were called Islamic Republic of Punjab and the Islamic Republic of Sind! The logic of a sovereign country is very

Lecture by Ismail Kamdar | Transcribed by Zara T. | Source : MuslimMatters [The following is the video and transcript of Ismail Kamdar's lecture "A Glimpse at the Life of Aishah Bint Abi Bakr." The transcript includes slight modifications for the sake of readability and clarity.] The lecture can be viewed here. Asalamualaykum warahmatulahi wabarakatuhu All praise is due to Allah (SWT) and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His final messenger, the mercy to this universe, the Prophet Muhammad [saws], and for everybody who follows his way with righteousness until the last day. The topic I have chosen for this session is a glimpse at the life of Aishah binti Abi Bakr [ra]. I have chosen this topic because, very often, we discuss the biographies of scholars, we focus on the biographies of the male scholars. While Islamic history is also rife with for many female scholars of Islam who serve as role models, not just for Muslim women, but also for the Muslim men, as there is much that we can learn from their lives which apply to both genders. Aishah [ra] was perhaps the most prolific of such scholars, as she was the wife of the Prophet Muhammad [saws]. She was one of the early scholars of his ummah, being from the sahabah, and she is a woman whose scholarship is agreed upon by the scholars of Islam. The ulema have agreed upon her high level of scholarship. So who was Aishah [ra]? Aishah was the only wife of the Prophet Muhammad [saws] to be born into a Muslim home, rather than converting to Islam. She was born approximately three years after prophethood in the home of Abu Bakr Siddiq [ra]. So she was a daughter of the greatest man after the prophets, Abu Bakr [ra], the greatest of the sahabah. Aishah was his daughter. And she grew up around the Prophet [saws] because her father was the prophet’s best friend. Aishah [ra], we do not know much about her life before she married the prophet, as she married the prophet [saws] at a very young age. And this age, in recent times, has been deemed problematic by many non-Muslims in that it does not agree with the customs of marriages of modern people. To be precise, the Prophet Muhammad [saws], he wedded Aishah when she was six but they only consummated the marriage a few years later after she had attained puberty. So, this marriage, in modern terms, seems problematic because of the culture we are used to, we are accustomed to. However, when you look at it in the historical context, there was nothing wrong with it because, at that time in Arabia, it was normal for people with such different age groups to get married. It was normal for men or women to get married at a very young age. People used to mature a lot faster in terms of their mental capabilities as they were raised to be husbands and wives, and so at a younger age, they were more prepared for marriage. If the Prophet Muhammad’s [saws] marriage was something bad, his enemies would have been the first to jump on it. But not a single enemy of Islam at the time picked on his marriage to Aishah. And if it was something bad, it would have affected her in a negative way. Normally when a young woman is forced into marriage to someone who she does not like, or she’s forced into marriage at a young age when she’s not ready, she grows intense dislike for that individual who she’s married to, and it stems into hatred. And this is seen in her life later on. But with Aishah and the Prophet Muhammad [saws], the case is the opposite. Her love for the Prophet [saws] grew so much that she became his most beloved wife. And even after the Prophet Muhammad [saws] had passed away, she became one of the leading

By William James Martin | Source: PalestineChronicle The ideology, or political project, of Zionism which underlies the creation of the State of Israel had, in fact, a Christian origin rather than a Jewish one, as writings can be found dating from the 1500’s, written by Christian clergymen in England advocating the migration of Jews to the Holy Land. The migration of Jews to Palestine was also advocated by Napoleon Bonaparte. The first Jewish presentations of Zionism were written by Moses Hess in 1862 and 20 years later by Leo Pinsker, both of the Russian Pale, with each writer advocated a separate state for Jews. Twentieth century Zionism was initiated by Theodore Herzl who, likewise, advocated a separate state for Jews in his book, Der Judenstaat, written in 1896. One year later he formed the World Zionist Congress which held its first meeting in Basel Switzerland in that same year. What to do with the Arabs present in the prospective Jewish state dominated the thoughts of the founders of Israel from Herzl up until the actual expulsion of the Palestinians in 1948. Thus Herzl stated, “[We shall] spirit the penniless population across the frontier by denying it employment. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly.” Thus the concept of the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians was introduced. It is not rocket science, if you want to create a state exclusively of Jews, mostly European, in the heart of the Middle East, then you must first get rid of the Arabs. In 1928, Vladimir Jabotinsky, founder of the Revisionist wing of the Zionist movement, which advocated the revision of the British Mandate for Palestine, to include the east bank of the Jordan and some of present-day Egypt, Jordan and Syria, and which was the progenitor of the present-day Lukud party, wrote, of the Palestinians, in his booklet, The Iron Wall, that no people were ever willing to give up their land to another people through mutual agreement and that the colonization by European Jews of Palestine must be prosecuted by force and against the will of the indigenous people, and must be executed behind an iron wall of bayonets, using his metaphor. By the 1930?s, ‘transfer’ of the Arabs was the unanimous preference of the founders of Israel. So-called transfer committees, headed by Joseph Weitz, Director of Land Management for the Jewish Agency, were set up explicitly for the purpose of studying ways of ‘transferring’ the Arabs out of Palestine. At the beginning of 1948, despite 50 years of land purchases, Jews only owned 6% of the land of Palestine. By the year’s end, the Israeli army controlled 78% of Palestine in a process of ethnic cleansing that saw the destruction of 531 Arab towns or villages and 11 Arab urban areas, with massacres, large or small, at almost all of those towns or villages, the almost complete looting of Palestinian property and wealth, including looting of the banks, confiscation of Palestinian homes and property, businesses, fields and orchards. The Palestinian people lost everything. Those who survived the massacres lost their careers, their means of livelihood, only to find refuge in tent cities set up by the United Nations which were later to become squalid refugee camps of cinder block buildings dotted around the Middle East. By just checking the time line, one quickly disposes of the 60 year old Israeli propaganda myth that the pre-state of Israel was innocently minding its own business when it was attacked by five armies of surrounding Arab states. The ethnic cleansing of Palestinians began on November 30, 1947 in Haifa when the Jewish army under David Ben Gurion, along with the Jewish terrorist group, the Irgun, under Manachem Begin, began shelling the Arab sections of that city. The ethnic cleansing of the Arabs of Haifa was completed by April, 1948 when shelling by the Jewish forces forced Haifa’s Arab residents to flee toward the

Islam is not merely a religion that asks to you worship and get closer to God. The religion guides humankind in each and every aspect of life. It is a way of life that is not limited to your relation with God, but also tells you how you should go about with other people, be it your parents, or your siblings, or friends and neighbors or your children or even your spouse. Before the advent of Islam, ignorance and wilderness were spread everywhere. Women had no rights neither as sisters, nor as daughters and not even as wives. The religion of Islam came and elevated the position of women. Where it laid down a few rules and principles, it also laid down the basic rules of forming a good mutual understanding between husband and wife. As previously believed that women were much lower in status than men were, Islam raised women and said that both were equal. It gave rights and responsibilities to both husbands and wives. Where there were rights of husbands on wives, Islam also outlined the rights of wives on husbands. If each of them fulfills the rights of others and performs his duties, an amazing husband wife relation is formed that cannot be broken by anybody. Islam asked wives to obey their husbands. They were asked to protect their husbands’ properties in their absence. A wife is also given the duty to bring up her husband’s children and protect his house. She is not allowed to allow anybody to enter his house without his permission. Islam also taught women that the respect and honor of their husband is actually their respect and honor. Islam also taught women to be thankful to their husbands for whatever they give them. They should be a source of comfort for their husbands. The Holy Quran says: “Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard.” (4:34) On the other side of the coin, where Islam tells a woman how she should be with her husband, it also tells husbands how they should treat their wives. Husbands are ordered to be kind towards their women. The Holy Prophets (Peace be upon Him) is reported to have said: “The best among you is he who is most kind to his wife.” Similarly, the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) gave a lot of importance to the rights of women and the treatment of wives in his last sermon. He said that wives have rights over husbands and husbands have rights over wives. Husbands should treat their wives with kindness. Among the rights of wives over husbands outlined by Islam, we see that a man should feed his wife what he eats and make her wear what he wears himself and should not mistreat her. Similarly, it tells a woman to be obedient towards her husband. She should guard the reputation of her husband in his absence and cause him comfort. It is also narrated by Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him): “A wife who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter Paradise.” Thus, the husband wife bond is a very precious bond. God has made the system of marriage such that both wives and husbands become a source of comfort and support for each other. They should live in peace and cooperation.
