The Quran and Modern Science : Compatible or Incompatible?

Al-Quran, the main source of the Islamic faith, is a book believed by its followers, the Muslims, to be completely of Divine origin. Muslims also believe that it contains guidance for all humankind. Since the message of the Quran is believed to be for all times, it should be relevant to every age.

If we analyse, the veracity of the Muslim belief does holds true and particularly in the light of established scientific discoveries. Below are some of the points that I want to share:

• Origin of the universe from Dust and Hot Gas, or Smoke. stated in Quran.

“Moreover, He Comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: ‘Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.’ They said: ‘We do come (together), in willing obedience.’” [Al-Quran 41:11]

• Life and our physical bodies originated from CLAY – The Noble Quran Claimed it and Science confirmed it!
• The existence of microscopic life in the Noble Quran.
• The decomposed dead feeds life; food cycle – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.
• Science and Existence of Plant’s pairs – The Noble Quran claimed it 1500 years ago!

“And fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two.” [Al-Quran 13:3]

“Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge.” [Al-Quran 36:36]

• Clouds are kept in the air by the winds, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
• The Ozone layer is a protective ceiling to earth, PRECISELY mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
• The Ozone layer is able to heal itself from damage – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
• The Ozone layer is raised to balance air pressure and temperature – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
• An atom can be split further, confirmed by science.
• The Motion of Earth in the Noble Quran… confirmed by science. The Noble Quran says that the earth is rotating around its axis.
• The Earth is round – The Noble Quran claimed it 1500 years ago!
• Lack of Oxygen and painful low pressure in space. Science confirmed the Noble Quran’s Divine Claim.
• The sun’s rising and setting POINTS on earth, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.
• The dead turning into Fossils and Iron. The Noble Quran Claimed it, and Science today Confirmed it!
• Mountains prevent the earth from shaking – The Noble Quran claimed it and Science confirmed it!
• Oceanology in the Noble Quran – See the Scientific confirmation.
• Geology in the Noble Quran – See the Scientific confirmation.
• The darkness of oceans and disappearance of light was mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science.
• Earthquakes occur before volcanoes, and the rising of earth’s core’s heavy metals during earthquakes, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
• The cracking of the moon mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
• The moon’s S-shaped orbit around earth is shaped like a branch of a date tree, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
• The Quran states that the light of the moon is reflected light, confirmed by science.

“And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) Lamp?” [Al-Quran 71:15-16]

• Seven Atmospheric Layers in the Noble Quran confirmed by Science!
• The Noble Quran and Astronomers both claim that the Universe is 18 billion years old.
• The Big Bang Theory and the Cosmic Crunch in the Noble Quran… Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him predicted around the time when the Cosmic Crunch occurs, the Sun would rise from the West. The Judgement Day.

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder?” [Al-Quran 21:30]

• Man is created from only a single drop from the entire SEMEN – precisely mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
• The formation of milk from blood and FARTH (digested food’s material), mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
• The blood circulation and the production of milk in the Breast: In the Noble Quran and Science.
• Breastfeeding for 2 years in the Noble Quran. Science had confirmed Islam’s Divine Claims.
• The Noble Quran on the Cerebrum: Lying is generated from the person’s forehead.
• Finger prints are unique – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.

“Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones? Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.” [Al-Quran 75:3-4]

• Honey was proven to be a healing medicine for humans as was mentioned in the Noble Quran.
• The fly insect and its cure: Mentioned in Islam and confirmed by Science (Bacteriophages).
• The Miracle of the Rain, Thunder and Electrical “fertilization” caused by winds mentioned in the Noble Quran!
• Water cycle, confirmed by science.

“Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth? then He causes to grow, therewith, produce of various colours.” [Al-Quran 39:21]

“He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: Verily in that are Signs for those who are wise.” [Al-Quran 30:24]

“And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).” [Al-Quran 23:18]

To attribute the presence of scientific facts in the Quran to coincidence would be against common sense and a true scientific approach. Indeed the scientific accuracy of the Quranic verses confirm the Quran’s open declaration.

“Soon will We show them Our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth it is not enough that Thy Lord doth witness all things?” [Al-Quran 41:53]

The Quran invites all humans to reflect on the Creation of this universe in the verse:

“Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of Night and Day – there are indeed Signs for men of understanding.” [Al-Quran 3:190]

The scientific evidences of the Quran clearly prove its Divine origin. No human could have produced a book, fourteen hundred years ago, that would contain such profound scientific facts. The Quran, however, is not a book of Science but a book of ‘Signs’. These signs invite Man to realize the purpose of his existence on earth, and to live in harmony with Nature. The Quran is truly a message from Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. It contains the same Message of the Oneness of God, that was preached by all prophets, right from Adam, Moses, Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them).

Prof. Tejasen accepted Islam on the strength of just one scientific ‘sign’ mentioned in the Qu’ran. Some people may require ten signs while some may require hundred signs to be convinced about the Divine origin of the Quran. Some would be unwilling to accept the Truth even after being shown a thousand signs. The Quran condemns such a closed mentality in the verse:

“Deaf, dumb and blind, They will not return (To the path).” [Al-Quran 2:18]

The Quran contains a complete code of life for the individual and society. Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), the Quranic way of life is far superior to the ‘isms’ that modern man has invented out of sheer ignorance. Who can give better guidance than the Creator Himself? I pray that this humble effort is accepted by Allah, to whom I pray for mercy and guidance (Aameen).
