“I saw Ibn Umar holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) said when he broke his fast: ‘Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allaah wills.’“ [Sunan Abi Dawud 2357]
- It is a confirmed narration (hadith) from the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu alayhi wassallam), narrated by ‘Abdullah b. ‘Umar, reported In Sunnan Abi Dawud (2357) and others. Graded “hasan” (sound) by Sh. al-Albani (rahimahullah): [Irwaa aI-Ghalil (4/39)].
- : Means thirst or extreme thirst. [AI-Adhkar by an-Nawawi (p.190), ‘Awn al-Ma’abud: (6/345), tuhfa al-Shakrin by as-Shawkani (p.223)].
- : The thirst going was specifically mentioned, even though the hunger has also gone. This is because the sweetness of water was potent due to the severe heat present In Makkah and al-Madinah at that time. The servant expresses gratitude to Allaah for this great blessing. [at-Tanwir Sharh Jam’i as-Saghir (8/343)]
- : The arteries are now moist by the food and drink entering the system. The dryness that was present during the fast goes. [‘Awn aI-Ma’abud: (6/345). tuhfa ash-Shakrin by as-Shawkani (p.223)]
- : The acceptance of the fast Is by the will of Allaah. The servant does not know whether the day’s fast is accepted or not. [tuhfa al-Shakrin by as-Shawkani (p.223)]. The hunger and thirst have gone, the hope of reward from Allaah still remains.
- The fasting people, during the night and day are in a state of worship; in the daytime, they are patient whilst fasting and, in the evening, they are grateful when they are able to eat and drink. [Wazaif Ramadan: p.24, by sh, ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Qasim].
May Allaah accept our fasts and increase us in His Obedience.
