Do not ask too many questions about religion

Sahih Bukhari, Book 41, Number 591

Narrated by Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba that the Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) said:

“Allah has forbidden for you,

1.  to be undutiful to your mothers,
2.  to bury your daughters alive,
3.  to not to pay the rights of the others (e.g. charity, etc.) and
4.  to beg of men (begging).

And Allah has hated for you,

1.  vain, useless talk, or that you talk too much about others,
2.  to ask too many questions, (in disputed religious matters) and
3.  to waste the wealth (by extravagance).”

Muslim also records the above tradition and gives another version with a different isnad:

Abu Huraira reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity. Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings.” (Sahih Muslim, Book #030, Hadith #5818)

Muslim gives a similar hadith, in which the words of the Prophet are connected with a specific question:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) addressed us and said: “O people, Allah has made Hajj obligatory for you; so perform Hajj.” Thereupon a person said: “Messenger of Allah, (is it to be performed) every year?” He (the Holy Prophet) kept quiet, and he repeated (these words) thrice, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: “If I were to say” Yes,” it would become obligatory (for you to perform it every year) and you would not be able to do it.” Then he said: “Leave me with what I have left to you, for those who were before you were desroyed because of excessive questioning, and their opposition to their apostles. So when I command you to do anything, do it as much as it lies in your power and when I forbid you to do anything, then abandon it.” (Sahih Muslim, Book #007, Hadith #3095)

Allah states in the Holy Quran:

“O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. But if ye ask about things when the Quran is being revealed, they will be made plain to you, Allah will forgive those: for Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most Forbearing. Some people before you did ask such questions, and on that account lost their faith.” (Surah Al Ma’idah 5:101-102)
