Broken Pieces of Clay and Pottery: A Lesson in Humanity
Source : Suhaibwebb | By Farhia Yahya
I was once walking along a narrow but busy street in Cairo when ahead of me was a donkey-cart laden with handmade pottery and clay utensils. It belonged to an old man who had been walking slowly beside it, and trying to sell whatever he could to make an income. He walked with hunched-shoulders, a turban tied round his head like a Sa’idi from Upper Egypt, his face wrinkled by age and the harsh Egyptian sun. It wasn’t hard to see that many difficult years had passed over him and he had probably been doing this for a long while.
As I continued to walk, I heard a cry and some commotion. The donkey had staggered Read more ...
What to do at time of Earthquake or other Calamity?
"What must be done at the time of an earthquake or other calamity, or an eclipse, strong wind or flood is to repent to Allah, may He be glorified, and to beseech Him and ask Him for well-being, and to remember Him a great deal and ask Him for forgiveness, as the Prophet (sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said at the time of an eclipse:
“When you see that, then turn to remembrance of Allah and call upon Him and ask for His forgiveness.”
It is also mustahabb to show compassion to the poor and needy, and to give charity to them, because the Prophet (sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:
“Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show Read more ...
The Institution of Zakat
The institution of Zakat works to fulfill the basic needs of the Muslim community. It strikes a balance between the economics of socialism and its call for equal distribution, and that of capitalism and how it concentrates wealth into the hands of the elite.
Zakat is not simply regarded as a tax, it is an act of worship which may be described as financial worship. Failure to properly discharge the obligation is a sin that incurs Allah's wrath and is a cause for the loss of divine protection over one's assets. It is also regarded as a factor that may justify punishment in the afterlife.
For Muslims, this is part of the belief system that denies Read more ...
Ramadan : The Mountain of Uhud
Narrated by Abu Dhar:
"Once, while I was in the company of the Prophet, he saw the mountain of Uhud and said, "I would not like to have this mountain turned into gold for me unless nothing of it, not even a single Dinar remains of it with me for more than three days (i.e. I will spend all of it in Allah's Cause), except that Dinar which I will keep for repaying debts." Then he said, "Those who are rich in this world would have little reward in the Hereafter except those who spend their money here and there (in Allah's Cause), and they are few in number." Then he ordered me to stay at my place and went not far away. I heard a voice and intended to Read more ...
Aftermath : Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
On March 11, a 9.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan near the city of Sendai. The earthquake generated a massive tsunami with waves as high as 30 feet, immediately resulting in floods, fires and the closure of airports and transit systems. Thousands of people are either dead or missing, and homes, fields and towns have been destroyed by flooding.
I am dedicating this blog post to the people of Japan and to the immense display of courage by them while facing a disaster of incomprehensible proportions. Today the world is Japanese, we all feel the pain of the people in Japan and we hope with all our heart that their suffering comes to an Read more ...
‘Uthman’s Caravan: Doing Business with Allah
During a year of difficulty– during the reign of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radhiallahu anhu), when the Muslims needed food– this HUGE caravan rolls into town. Everyone clamers around, they want to buy stuff, and it goes straight to the house of ‘Uthman (radhiallahu anhu). He owned the caravans.
So they went to ‘Uthman and said “We want to buy it from you, we’ll give you double the price”– that is, double the cost, for food. They needed it that much. Subhanallah.
‘Uthman (radhiallahu anhu) said: “I can get a better deal then that.”
They said: “we’ll give you triple the price”.
‘Uthman (radhiallahu anhu) said: “I can Read more ...
What Made the Companions Special!
What Made the Companions Special!
In a report by Abdullah bin 'Amr bin 'Aas (radiAllahu ‘anhu), he related that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah with her daughter. On the daughter’s wrist were two heavy gold bracelets. The Messenger asked her, “Do you pay Zakat on this?” She replied, “No.” The Messenger said: “Would it please you that Allah will encircle you with two bracelets of fire?” The reporter commented that she took them off and threw them down in front of the Messenger, and said: “They are for Allah and his Messenger.” [Recorded in Ahmed, Tirmidhi]
Think about this for a second – fiqh of zakat aside. Imagine, if you Read more ...
Zakat-ul-Fitr (post-Ramadan obligatory charity)
Zakat-ul-Fitr (post-Ramadan obligatory charity)
Sadaqat Al-Fitr (or Zakat Al-Fitr) is prescribed by the Shari'ah based on the general indication of the texts of the Quran and the Sunnah, as well as by scholarly consensus. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): "He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself. And mentions the Name of his Lord and prays." [Surah Al A'la 87:14-15]
The Commander of the Believers, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-Azeez would command the Muslims to give Sadaqat Al-Fitr and recite the above mentioned verse. As for the Sunnah, it was narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar that he said, "The Messenger of Allah, sallAllahu ‘alayhi Read more ...

Ramadan : Bathe Yourself with Money!
Bathe Yourself with Money!
- Extracted from a Speech by Muhammad Alshareef
Have you ever seen someone run out of the masjid immediately after salah. In fact, the imam may barely have said salam, and this person is already standing up, getting ready to take off (you may have seen this after the Jumu’ah prayers). When we see someone in such haste, we know that there is some affair that pre-occupied the brother or sister and that haste is indeed a weighty matter.
But now let’s ask ourselves a question:
Who amongst us would jump like that because we delayed the paying of a voluntary sadaqah? Who?
It is the most God-fearing person who would do so - RasulAllah Read more ...
