Slaughtering of Animals – The Halal way (Video)

Praise be to Allah.

Sacrifice is an act of worship, and worship can only be done for Allah alone; the one who does it for anyone other than Allah is a mushrik (polytheist). Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wassallam): “Verily, my Salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” “He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.”” [Surah al-An’am 6:162-163]

Also, Allah says:

“Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals – cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns – and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal – unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) – and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub (stone altars). (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” “They ask you (O Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) what is lawful for them (as food ). Say: “Lawful unto you are At-Tayyibat [all kind of Halal (lawful-good) foods which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits, etc.)]. And those beasts and birds of prey which you have trained as hounds, training and teaching them (to catch) in the manner as directed to you by Allah; so eat of what they catch for you, but pronounce the Name of Allah over it, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Swift in reckoning.”” [Surah al-Ma’idah, 5:3-4]

Also, Allah says:

“Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise); Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only).” [Surah al-Kawthar, 108:1-2]

Muslim (1978) narrated that ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said: “may Allah curse the one who offers a sacrifice to anything other than Allah.”

If a person offers a sacrifice to anyone other than Allah, whether he mentions the name of Allah over it or not, it is major shirk that puts one beyond the pale of Islam and the meat slaughtered by him is not halaal; rather it is dead meat and it is haraam to eat it.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So eat of that (meat) on which Allah’s Name has been pronounced (while slaughtering the animal), if you are believers in His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.).” [Surah al-An’am 6:118]

Also, Allah says:

“Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allah’s Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allah). And certainly, the Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind) to dispute with you, and if you obey them [by making Al-Maytatah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikun (polytheists) [because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that which Allah has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allah is polytheism].” [Surah al-An’am 6:121]

Also, Allah says:

“See you not that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and Ad-Dawab (moving living creatures, beasts, etc.), and many of mankind? But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whomsoever Allah disgraces, none can honour him. Verily! Allah does what He wills.” [Surah al-Hajj, 22:18]

Al-Tirmidhi (1521) narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah said: “I was present with the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) on the day of al-Adha at the prayer place. When he had finished his khutbah he came down from his minbar and a ram was brought which the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam)  slaughtered with his own hand. He said, “In the name of Allah, Allah is Most Great. This is on behalf of myself and on behalf of those of my ummah who have not offered a sacrifice.”” [Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi]

Animals and other living creatures were created by Allah, the Lord of the Universe. They have their own independent existences and modes of living. Allah has said in the Holy Quran that every animal has its own communal life and its own way to do ‘Ibadah, or service, to Allah. Every animal praises Allah, the Exalted, in its own way. Allah says:

“There is not a moving (living) creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book, then unto their Lord they (all) shall be gathered.” [Surah al-An’am 6:38]

It is Allah who gave every animal its ability. He enabled birds to fly, fish to swim and horses to gallop. Animals were here on Earth long before humans. The first man and woman on Earth were Adam and Hawwa (may peace be upon them). Allah gave them the responsibility to be caretakers on Earth, or, as the term used in the Quran states, a Khalifa in the world.

Humans, who have been created with a greater intellect than animals, have a special responsibility to be fair, just and kind to all other living things. The Blessed Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) once said that every injustice will be paid back on the Day of Judgment, even if one goat hits another with its horns it will be taken account of. Therefore, in our use of animals for our own survival we must do justice. Islamic approach to preparing an animal for slaughter is to treat animals in a manner which results in the relative composure of the animals. Animals should not be tortured, maltreated and slaughtered indiscriminately by methods which defy the islamic belief.
