Jihad in the Path of Satan – Terrorists fight in cause of Satan

A muslim scholar explains the obligation of maintaining public safety for Muslims and non-Muslims alike; that terrorists who spread fear in society fight in the path of Satan – so it is obligatory upon the Muslim scholars and parents to protect their youth from the ideologies of the extremists and bloodthirsty terrorists and to exonerate Islam from the treachery of these terrorists towards the most basic foundations of the Religion.

The Muslim scholar, Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan said:

All praise is due to Allah and may the peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

The Necessity of Public Safety

There is no doubt that the spread of safety (in the society) is a necessary, vital objective and humanity is more in need of it than food and drink. For this reason, Prophet Abraham (alayhis salaam) gave precedence to requesting safety over provision in his supplication,

“O Lord, make this land secure (safe) and provide its inhabitants with fruits (of sustenance).” [Quran, 2:126]

This is because people do not enjoy food and drink in the presence of fear. The routes through which sustenance is transported from place to place are cut off due to fear. For this reason, Allah imposed the most severe of punishments (through the authorities) for those (terrorists and criminals) who cut off the routes (upon which people’s sustenance and livelihood depend) saying,

“Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth to cause corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.” [Quran, 5:33]

The Five Necessities Protected by Islam

Islam came to preserve the five necessities and they are: religion, life, intellect, honour and wealth. It imposes severe punishments for the one who violates these necessities irrespective of whether they relate to Muslims or those under covenant with the Muslims. The latter have rights and obligations just like the Muslims. The Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said,

“Whoever killed a (non-Muslim) who is under a covenant will not smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

And He, the Most High, said,

“And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety.” [Quran, 9:6]

Justice Even With a Treacherous Enemy

When the Muslims see signs of treachery from those with whom they have a covenant and have reason to fear, it is not permissible for them to fight them until they inform them of the termination of the covenant between them. Nor are they to attack them by surprise without open notification. He, the Most High, said,

“If you have reason to fear betrayal from a people, throw (their treaty) back to them, (putting you both) on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors.” [Quran, 8:59]

Protection of the Blood, Wealth and Honour of Non-Muslim Citizens

Those who come under treaty with the Muslims are of types:

a) The one who enters the lands of the Muslims with a guarantee of safety enabling him to fulfil some duty and safely returning back to his land after its completion.

b) The one who is under a peace treaty between Muslims and non-Muslims. Such a one is guaranteed safety until the treaty itself ends between the two parties. It is not permissible for anyone to transgress against him, just as it is not permissible for him to transgress against any of the Muslims.

c) The one who enters under the rule of the Muslims by paying a tribute to them (which relieves him of military duty and obligates them to offer complete protection for his right to practice his religion unharmed and safeguard his blood, wealth and honour).

Violating the Safety of Non-Muslims is Treachery

Islam guarantees safety for the blood, wealth and honour of all these categories of non-Muslims. Whoever from the Muslims transgresses against them has acted treacherously towards Islam and deserves an exemplary punishment. Abiding by justice is obligatory towards the Muslims and the non-Muslims, even if they are not from those under covenant, do not have a guarantee of safety or do not even live under their rule. He, the Exalted said,

“And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgress.” [Quran, 5:2]

And He, the Most High, said,

“O you who believe, stand persistently firm for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people (who were unjust to you) prevent you from being just to them. Be just, that is nearer to righteousness.” [Quran, 5:8]

On Those Who Terrorise Societies

As for those who transgress against the security (of a society), they are Kharijites (extremist renegades), highway robbers or rebels. A stern, exemplary punishment is meted out to each of these categories by which they (and those contemplating similar crimes) are held at bay and by which both Muslims and non-Muslims who are under a covenant, have a guarantee of safety or are citizens are protected from the evil (of these people). Those who perpetrate bombings in any place, destroy lives which are protected and wealth that is to be respected whether of Muslims or non-Muslims, turn women into widows and children into orphans, they are the ones about whom Allah said,

“And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents. And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption. And when it is said to him, ‘Fear Allah’, pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.” [Quran, 2:204-206]

Treachery and Corruption is Not Jihad

And it is strange that those transgressors who abandon the judgement of Islam label this action of theirs as “Jihad in the path of Allah”. This is from the greatest of lies against Allah, for Allah has declared this to be corruption (fasad) and did not make it “Jihad”. However, we should not be surprised that the (ideological) ancestors of these people are from the Kharijite (renegades) who excommunicated the Prophet’s Companions and who killed both Uthman and Ali (radhiAllaahu anhu) who are from the rightly-guided caliphs and from the ten who were promised Paradise. They killed them and (spuriously) labeled this action of theirs as “Jihad in the path of Allah”. Rather, it is Jihad in the path of Satan. Allah, the Most High, said,

“Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut (Satan).” [Quran, 4:76]

Islam is Innocent of the Actions of the Terrorists: The Prophet of Islam Ordered Their Slaying

Islam is not to be made responsible for this action of theirs as is said by the enemies of Islam from amongst the unbelievers and hypocrites who say that the religion of Islam is a religion of terrorism. They use the actions of these criminals as proof. But this action of theirs is not from Islam and nor does Islam or any religion affirm it. Rather, it is a renegade ideology and the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) encouraged its proponents to be killed, saying, “Wherever you find them, slay them (the Kharijite renegades).”

He also promised a plentiful reward for anyone who killed them. They are to be fought by the leader of the Muslims just as the Companions of the Prophet fought them under the leadership of the chief of the believers, Ali bin Abi Talib (radhiAllaahu anhu).

The Terrorists Learned Their Ideologies From Politicised Thinkers and Radicals, Not Muslim Institutions

Some of the hypocrites and ignoramuses claim that the Muslim schools have taught them this ideology and that the curriculums of study (in Muslim schools) comprise this deviated ideology. Then they demand that these curriculums of education are modified. We say (in response): Indeed, the proponents of this ideology (of terrorism) did not graduate from the Muslim schools, nor did they take knowledge from the Muslim scholars because they (themselves) declare studying in these very schools, institutes and faculties to be unlawful (because they consider all Muslim societies to have left Islam and turned apostate).

The Terrorists Undermine Muslim Scholars to Make it Easier to Misguide Ignorant Youth

They belittle the Muslim scholars, declaring them to be ignorant, and describe them as “paid workers of the sultans”. Rather, they learn from the ideologues of deviant ideology and from the youthful in age and foolish-minded who are like them – just as their predecessors (upon this deviant ideology) declared the scholars amongst the Prophet’s Companions to be ignorant and declared them to be disbelievers.

The Duty Upon Muslim Scholars and Parents

That which we hope today is that parents will attentively turn to their children, not leaving them to the proponents of destructive ideologies who direct them to misguided ideologies and deviated methodologies. They should not leave them to attend dubious gatherings, go on unknown trips, and to “relaxation camps” which are nothing but grazing pastures for those who misguide others and as game for predatory foxes. They should not allow them to travel outside the country whilst they are young in age. It is also upon the scholars to embark upon giving sound direction and teaching authentic [Islamic] beliefs in schools and mosques and through the means of media so that they do not allow any opportunity for the misguided who come out in the darkness whenever the rectifiers are heedless.

May Allah grant success to all in acquiring beneficial knowledge and performing righteous actions and may the peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.
