The following is Malcolm X’s (al-Hajj, Malik al-Shabazz) letter to his assistants in Harlem during his pilgrimage to Makkah in April of 1964:
Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient holy land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the holy scriptures. The first vision of the Kaaba and the Sacred Mosque is an unforgettable moment. The Kaaba is a magnificent structure; it stands serene and immovable as thousands circumambulate it on three levels and playful birds chirp as they maneuver with wondrous swiftness above, occasionally mirroring the clockwise motion of the pilgrims below them. The deen of Islam is great which is apparent as it comes from the One who is Great; and it is from His attribute of Greatness that He is Kind and Merciful. Allah the Most High has made it easy for us to obey Him and has made it easily accessible to us and facilitated our performance of it. Allah says:
It was said to Ibrahim: “And proclaim to mankind the Hajj. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant mountain highway (to perform Hajj)” [Surah Al Hajj 22:27]
This verse above is brought to life by a plethora of accounts spanning one and a half millennia. It seems particularly salient given that right up until the first third of the twentieth century, people of all colors, languages and lands were traveling (at least in the last leg of their journeys) on ‘camel’ and on ‘foot’ to the holy sanctuary.
